Linux can be obtained two ways. The first way is to buy it from a Linux distribution company. The second way is to down-load the program and associated programs from internet sites and install them yourself. For the new or non linux user it is worth knowing that although distribution companies may have different marques, the underlying kernel and programs are the same. Thus RedHat7.1, SuSE7.1, Mandrake8 are functionally the same with the 2.4.3 kernel.

Linux Distributions:
The main ones are:
RedHat Inc: Started in 1994 and now the largest (and wealthiest) of the distribution companies. They pioneered the RPM package management system for easy program installation and deletion.
Mandrake SA: Mandrake is often cited as a better ChapeauRouge que le ChapeauRouge. It is desktop-friendly, easy to install and use.
SuSE gmbh: perhaps the finest of the distributions. And their contribution to Linux is large, from X-servers to SCSI drivers.
Slackware Inc: The oldest of the distributions and the most 'Unix-y' -favored by ISPs for legendary stability.
TurboLinux Inc: They are a very friendly and dynamic company and very popular in Japan, China, and Korea.
Lineo Inc: You might remember the company in an older incarnation firstly as Digital Research ( of DrDOS fame), and lately as Caldera. Desktop-friendly Caldera's OpenLinux pioneered the GUI-based installation, now favored by all.
Gentoo: A non-commercial distribution available via download only.
Conectiva: A Brazillian distribution large in Latin America
Debian: This is Linux for the true GNU believers. It is non-commercial, and put together by volunteers. Debian uses its own 'deb' package management system. Debian also distributes GNULinux's young cousin GNUHurd.
